I am a technical translator, proofreader and teacher of translation and of Internet search techniques.

Born in Reading to an English father and a Swiss mother, I was raised in a small village in the rolling countryside of the Chiltern Hills in county Buckinghamshire in the south of England, near Henley on Thames. I later moved to Switzerland, where I learnt Italian, German and French.

The English language has become my profession as I do English translations and proofreading of texts written in English for companies, institutions and private clients all over Switzerland in a wide range of fields, general and technical.

I obtained my Diploma in Translation (subsequently translated into BA in Translation) from the School for Translators and Interpreters, Zurich (DOZ), Switzerland / University of Surrey, England, in 1993.

Don't choose just anybody to translate your text into English!

Professional translators work into their native language

A translator who flouts this basic rule is likely to be ignorant of other important quality issues as well.

OK, there are exceptions, but not many: Sometimes a translator with particular subject-matter expertise may agree to work into what is for him or her a foreign language, but only if he or she is capable of guaranteeing equivalent quality. In this case, the translation should be carefully edited by a native speaker before it goes to press.

And let's face it: a reference letter written in poor English isn't going to be very convincing to a prospective employer or to the immigration authorities!

So if you are serious about getting a new job or emigrating, be sure to choose a qualified translator who translates into his/her native language.

I translate primarily into my mother tongue (English), which means that I can offer you superior services in terms of:

Translators and bilinguals: look closer!

Professional translators are first and foremost writers, capable of producing texts that read well in the target language. They are generally fluent in their source language(s) [the language(s) out of which they translate] as well. Most important of all, they are effective bridges between the languages they work in. They can render the message of the original text, with appropriate style and terminology, in their native language.

Bilingualism is something else: Bilinguals speak two languages fluently but are not necessarily good at moving information between the two, especially in writing.

Bilingualism is not a guarantee of written fluency or skill in translation.

You may send me your text by email (preferred) or by post; I usually deliver my translations by email (unless you require legalisation).

Once I have seen your text, I shall be able to give you an accurate quote for a translation.

After I have translated your text, I may need to contact you to clear up any queries I had during the job. Therefore, please provide your contact details.

An inquisitive translator is good news

No one reads your texts more carefully than your translator. Along the way, he or she is likely to identify fuzzy bits—sections where clarification is needed. This is good news for you since it will allow you to improve your original.

A European video-games specialist notes that management did not really understand their own stock-options policy until an English translation was commissioned: the translator asked many questions and delivered a version that was far clearer than the original.

The chief economist of a major bank in Paris says: "We try to wait for our texts to come back from the translators before going to press with the original French. The reason is simple: our translators track our subjects closely. Their critical eye helps us identify weak spots in the original."

Good translators ask questions along the way. If your translator asks no questions, either he or she has understood everything perfectly and produced a (near-)perfect translation or else you need to change translator.

Choosing a translator for the first time?

Translation prices will vary, but while high prices do not necessarily guarantee high quality, it is realistic to say that below a certain level you are unlikely to receive a text that does credit to your company and its products or services. If translators are earning little more than a babysitter, they are unlikely to be dedicating to your text the attention that it deserves.

If you expect to pay half the price, expect also to get half the quality!

Be realistic. How many pages can a translator produce an hour? How much time do you expect him or her to spend crafting the text that will promote your product or service? (How much time did your team spend producing the original?)
