Creating a macro button

The instructions below apply to Word 97:

Adding a macro button to your toolbar
Adding a macro button to your right-click menu

Once you have installed your macro, you will need to create a macro button either in your toolbar or in your right-click menu in order to run the macro.

NOTE: Adding a button to either a Word toolbar or right-click menu will give you quick access to the dictionary. However, you should NOT try to add a button to both places. If you try to add both, the macro may not operate properly.

Adding a macro button to your toolbar

Before you begin, download the following image to your hard drive by right-clicking on it and selecting Save As (save the image as a bitmap file and call it: dict_icon.bmp):

Alternatively you could use another bitmap image, providing it is roughly 15-20x15-20 pixels in size. Click here for more personalized icons.

If you wish to use one of MS Word's standard buttons, skip the beginning and go directly to step no. 6 below.

1. With Word open, open the Windows Start menu. Click on Programs…, then Accessories, then Paint.

2. The Paint window will open. From the File menu of Paint, pick Open. Navigate to the folder that contains the dict_icon.bmp file. Select dict_icon.bmp and click the Open button.

3. From the Edit menu of Paint, pick Select All.

4.From the Edit menu of Paint, pick Copy.

5. Close the Paint program.

6. From the Tools menu in Word, pick Customize.

7. The Customize dialog box will open. Click the Commands tab.

8. In the Categories list, scroll to Macros and click on it.

9. In the Commands list, find the name you used when you installed the macro. (If you used the name "Dictionary", it will appear as Normal.NewMacros.Dictionary.)

10. Click on the name, then drag it to the spot on the toolbar where you want the dictionary button to appear.

11. In the Customize dialog box, click the Modify Selection button.

12. A drop-down list will appear. Select Default Style.

13. Click the Modify Selection button again and select Paste Button Image. The graphic that you have just saved to your hard drive will appear in the place that you selected in your toolbar.
(Alternatively select Change Button Image and choose an image for your button).
Close the Customize window.

14. Close all open dialog boxes. You may find that you need to close your Word document and reopen it to save the toolbar change in the appropriate Word template.
